My Marine

Matthew Bowers who was deployed 2 months ago to Kuwait is the only man who has my heart because he is the only one who has truly given me his.

After his deployment weeks went by with no word, since we had a very steady and serious relationship and engagement, I had no need to doubt the love between us, but much reason to worry.  Every day I would check the mail to see if I had received anything from him.  At this time an empty envelope from him would have been enough as long as I had something solid and real to hold, a proof that would give me renewed strength to face the next day alone and with him so many miles away.

Then one day after work I was pulling into my drive way and I noticed a young man sitting on the porch at first I was a little scared but soon realized it was Matts best friend also a marine.  He was there to deliver a special box. He proceeded to tell me, he promised Matt to make sure the delivery went straight to me.  Of course too excited to wait or even put down my purse I ripped through the tape and inside found a small book.

At the top of the page was a date Feb 4th. that started off .. Dear honey... It was a book of letters from the day of our 1 year anniversary he had been writing one every day till the week before he shipped out.  Also was a note saying, I know you worry honey but keep all these letters close and read only one everyday until I return.  Well it would have lasted me a year but I had to read every last one.  Finally the end of the book came and as I turned the page I noticed something fall out, it was a unattached sheet of paper that read: I knew you wouldn't wait, as I couldn't wait to give you this.

Two months went by with out another word, then it happened.  It was morning and I was relaxing out on the porch when the doorbell rang, I got up to answer and there was no one there, just rose petals leading out to the barn, and on one of the stools was a sheet of paper that said : “To give you this”  Then Matt came around the corner got on his knee and opened a box with an engagement ring and asked me to be his wife.  It didn't even take me a second to say yes, and it made all the waiting and worries worth it.

What a man. My Marine.
