Special Day
There was a moment of anxiousness with the realization of a wedding anniversary quickly approaching. Would this be a normal, ho-hum effort, or would this be something to prove love still rules this relationship. So the decision was made, I would pull off a great surprise, totally unbeknownst to my wife.
Five days before the "day," I came home from work and gave the normal "Hi, how are you." Then it began. I suggested that she do something with her friends on that "day" as I had been invited to play golf with some work buddies. She paused like she knew what I was asking, something that was inappropriate for celebrating. But just as quickly, she gave an affirmative response to my request. Wow, that was easy I thought. She has probably gotten so used to my unromantic ways, that it wasn't worth the fight of trying to convince me to make our "day" special.
Two days before our anniversary I called her friends to confirm their participation in my romantic scheme. They were in; they had pretended to plan an afternoon shopping and dinner afterwards, "perfect!" I called for a caterer to have afternoon finger food ready for the guests. Everything was underway for a great "day."
My golf alibi was working well until my "buddy" from work called and spoke with my wife with one day to go. I overheard from the T.V. room that it was Steve she was talking too, and guess what he did? He called to play golf tomorrow, ouch. "I thought it was already planned," she said. I'm not sure what he said, but I ran to the phone and told her I heard it was Steve. She didn't mention it though when I got done with talking with Steve, which seemed a little odd, considering the awkwardness of the situation. So, I ran with the silence and acted like nothing happened.
Well, the "big day" arrived. As is usual on a Saturday we go for coffee in the morning. That went off without a hitch, so far so good. After a morning of working on the yard she went in to get ready for her friends to pick her up. After she was gone, six of our closest couple friends came over, and we all helped transform our house into an exquisite but simple party zone. It was perfect too, with the Christmas lights lit up and the snow falling, the house looked as if it were a scene from an evening painting. Her friend faking sickness then drove my wife up the driveway. She thought I was being goofy when I came out to meet her there. What a look she had on her face when we walked in to a sparkling house with decor and friends. A huge sign hung above the living room, "I Love You Sweetheart!" "Happy Anniversary" I said. She had such a look of astonishment over her face. She wanted to cry, but didn't know if she should, so I gave the look that gave her permission.
Everyone had gifts for us in spite of my instructions not to. I could tell my wife was totally surprised and genuinely touched by my effort for her. I guess it had been a long time since I made her feel special. What a great "day!"
