male and female
One of the fascinating things about the Bible is the way that enormous truths are often stated in very few words. The very first chapter of the Bible includes these words: "male and female He created them." God made two kinds of people, and it is true both that He made them different and that He made them to be together. This is basic to our being human.
Think about the difference! It's big. It's powerful. It's quite mysterious. It's delightful. It's puzzling. It can be frustrating. It's beautiful. It is grand. We need to understand it as well as we can. Life will go better if we do, and if we respect it.
Husbands and wives need to understand each other, not just as individual personalities, but also as men and women. We singles need to understand, too, whether or not we end up marrying. We deal with each other every day. And God has built into us a difference, a difference which is a challenge sometimes, but which is very good, just the same.
I read something sort of funny several years ago, written by a female editor of a college newspaper in her column. She said something like this:
"Men do not understand women. Women, on the other hand, do understand men, but what there is to understand about men is so simple that women are afraid they must misunderstand."
This subject is too big to cover in this little space. You might enjoy and benefit from reading books like the following: What's the Difference? (by
John Piper), Men and Women: Enjoying the Difference (by Larry Crabb) and two by Elisabeth Elliot, Let Me Be a Woman and The Mark of a Man. These are all so helpful, and there are other books, tapes, and videos, too. How about being a student of the two sexes? It's rewarding.
For the record, as a guy, I think women are the more interesting of the two. I suspect I will go on feeling that way.
