staring, or learning

We all have only so much "free time." Like other human beings, we singles can either spend it or invest it.

Summon whatever imagination is necessary, and picture yourself all alone one evening---no date, no one with whom you're getting together. What are you going to do? (Binge? No.)

A popular option for many Americans, of course, is to watch a video or DVD of a movie. Often, these movies are either a) romantic or b) filled with shouting, gunplay, screeching wheels, and explosions. I'll leave it to you to decide who's watching what.

What I'd like to suggest is that there is another use of free time that will, in the long run, do more for you. While these two kinds of movies might express what you'd like to be involved with (depending on who "you" are), they won't do much to get you there. Another option might---although this is not to encourage individuals toward a lot of shouting, gunplay, etc.

The time you and I have can be invested by learning something, instead of just being entertained. If we read or watch something that actually teaches us, it gives at least two immediate benefits: 1) our minds get exercised, like a muscle and 2) we gain information which might help us personally and also give us content for conversation with others. Both benefits can make us more interesting people, which is one reason why learning is an investment of our time. Whether or not we're really bright, we can still have an alive, fit mind and interesting things to share. These make us more attractive to members of the opposite you-know-what. The romance and the life of action we desire do become more of a possibility as we develop ourselves through reading or watching things that teach us and challenge us.

We can either stare at entertainment and be momentarily happy potatoes on the couch, or we can learn and grow and be the better and more attractive for it.
