joy in conversing

It was such a pleasure to talk with a woman I met and saw only once in another city. She had a warm, gentle way about her and was perceptive in comments she made. We just really connected. We communicated. She came to mind today, which is why I mentioned her, but gladly, I've had plenty of such conversations and enjoyed them all.

What a great thing it can be for a man and a woman, whether there is romance or not, to spend time talking with each other and listening to each other. It's most fun, I guess, when there is a chemistry between their personalities; again, it doesn't have to be romantic, though there is still appreciation of the fact that they are male and female. When men and women take interest in each other's point of view, conversation can be both educational and recreational. We were made to communicate, and when there is consideration of one another, it's an awfully nice activity.

Sometimes men and women are sort of talking past one another, not fully hearing what the other is saying. Often in such a case, I think the man, especially, is not being attentive; women generally do a better job of tuning in during conversation. Sometimes, also, there is a lot of alternating talk about oneself, back and forth, while each "listener" is readying for his or her next comments. Both situations could be remedied by relaxing a little, listening, asking questions, really listening to the responses, and reflecting.

Not every conversation can or should be treated like it's something deep, of course. Life is too busy for most of us to do that. But even in brief interaction between men and women (such as I had today with a cashier, an older woman with an appealing personality), we can still look each other in the eye and, in a warm and respectful way, make each other's day a little better through our conversation.
