Money & Marriage-- Dave Ramsey

I listen to a Christian financial advisor, Dave Ramsey, nearly every day on the AM radio waves. He is a husband and father; his children, Denise, Rachel & Daniel. He speaks to more than 2,000,000 people weekly on matters from finance to major life decisions. He also brings his straight-forward advice to several television programs including: The Today Show, CBS This Morning, CNN, CNNfn, The Gayle King Show, Life Outreach with James Robison, The G. Gordon Liddy Show and the Oliver North show.
He will be doing a financial money makeover on "Movie & A Makeover" on TBS this Fall, so stay tuned.

I was privileged to attend one of his Live Events with my husband and my parents last fall. Wow, what a guy! He and his wife Sharon had quite a story to tell.
When Dave was 26, he had a net worth of a little over a million dollars, pulling in more than $20,000.00 a month! Now that's a lot of money! He admitted that at the time, he thought he was having fun with $4 million in real estate. You say, "What? He wasn't having fun?"

He was swimming in debt and as an end result, in two and half years of fighting and struggling to keep their heads above water, they lost everything. They were forced to declare bankruptcy--they hit rock bottom.

This was a rude awakening in Dave's life. It caused him to take a good hard look at himself. He began interviewing others who had struck it rich. What was their secret; their drive? How did they reach the goals they had set before themselves?
He became a Christian, finally getting his life in order and in 1988, formed The Lampo Group, an organization who counsels with those struggling financially. He then wrote a book, "Financial Peace", starting first by selling it out of his car. Then, along with a friend of his, he started a local talk show called "The Money Game", now referred to as "The Dave Ramsey Show"

Their third best seller, "The Total Money Makeover" was released in 2003. And they're still growing, at nearly 100 team members and a variety of services and products, designed to help you finally reach financial freedom.

Dave uses "Baby Steps" to help men and women as yourselves to once and for all cut up the credit cards (the first step), to make a vow to yourself never to use the services of these "snakes" as Dave calls them, and steadily and surely pay off your debts, from the smallest debt to the biggest. He calls this "debt snowballing."

Then, once you are out of debt, you can begin to save... and give money away. How wonderful would it be not to have payments anymore? No more mortgage, no more car payments, no more credit card bills flooding your mailbox every month? How wonderful would it be to donate that desperately needed money for that church roof, for the vibrantly growing youth ministry, for that struggling young family you fight to keep food on the table?

As I've witnessed from the radio call-ins, financial freedom IS possible! It's just a matter of getting your priorities straight, caring for your family as God intended and keeping as far away from the "snakes" as possible.

Dave speaks about finances in a way that is fun, down to earth and entertaining, and yet, he gets his point across crystal clear. God didn't intend for us to be in debt to anyone, in fact He cautions strongly against it.

Each day, Dave will give you, the listeners, no-nonsense advice on everything from how to deal with creditors, the best types of mortgages, trouble with credit cards, children and money and even how to handle money in marriage. He encourages people like you and me to put aside money for emergencies, children's' college, retirement, investment.
As Dave frequently mentions, "It's the same advice your grandmother gave you, but we keep our teeth in."

In word, save your money like grandma did. If you don't have the money for it, don't buy it.

A reader says ... note to reader who says it's stupid to just pay with cash, from author-- Dave Ramsey has a solution to what you're saying. You take baby steps in becoming debt free. After you have built up either 500.00 or 1,000 in your emergency fund, depending on your income, you work hard at paying off your credit card bills. Then, you build up 3-6 months of living expenses--and the upside? You're debt free so you're not making any more credit card payments, house payments, car payments..... my husband and i are on the road to becoming debt free(wish we had heard of Dave before we were married), and we're very excited!

Think about this- When you use credit cards you become slave to the lender- hence MASTERcard

God's wish for us is to be debt free, and until I went to the Dave Ramsey seminar I never saw it in that light.  Best Wishes to becoming debt free!

A reader says ... Ask yourself how does somebody with 4 million in real estate and a positive cash flow of 20,000 a month go broke? He didn't know what he was doing in real estate. If you want to get somewhere in life you need to be willing to take calculated risks. Loans and leverage on real estate is nothing but tools to build equity and income. If you pay cash for all of it you are being plain stupid and not using your money wisely. Also you are setting yourself up to get your assets taken if you are sued.

A reader says ... I to have been listening to Dave for neary 4 years. I also greatly benefited from his teachings.
