A Sweet Shape

I saw a young woman in a library one evening. Though I've seen many women, I was struck by something on this occasion. She sat working on an assignment at a table, her back to me. Modestly dressed, she also was wrapped in a long sweater, but it was still possible to see her basic form - narrow shoulders and torso and somewhat wider hips.

"What a sweet shape," I thought; it was a shape that almost spoke: Be gentle with this person. There was nothing sexual in my reaction to her, just an observation of this feminine creature in her differentness from me.

The design of the woman is a masterly blending of form and function. The very features that make her a woman both serve particular purposes and are also beautiful. Her wider hips, part of the beauty of her form, are given to her so she can receive a man in lovemaking and also (maybe later) give birth to a child. Both of these capabilities are relational; a woman, in her very shape, is made to relate to others.

Men, this is important to always keep in mind. If you move toward a woman to become joined with her, you should remember that she is made for ongoing relating to you, not just when you want something. She is also likely to want children. This is how God made her. His purpose was and is good; He made her to be a helper to the man (Gen.2:18-24), but one which the man should always treat with sensitivity and understanding (1 Pet.3:7).

Some women, also, need to consider their own design. While most women seem to move naturally toward relating to others, there are a few who live as loners. Whether the reason is fear, anger, or pride, if a woman tries to go through life with a tendency to isolation, she can never be what she was made to be, can never be fulfilled. There are sometimes difficult reasons why a woman would be a loner, but they need to be overcome, or else she is fighting her very nature. God can heal the soul.

There is mystery and wonder everywhere in God's creation. The shape of a woman is much more than just beautiful.
