Senator Elizabeth Dole-RNC

I was very impressed by Elizabeth Dole's speech on Tuesday, August 31st, 2004 at the Republican National Convention.

She touched on a great many issues that we as Christian Americans can relate to and have wanted to hear for so long.

In her speech, she covered everything from President Bush's courageous leadership to the 9-1-1 tragedy to the Iraq War to why we are Republicans. But what I most related to and was inspired about, was her mention of marriage and importance of life.

To quote her, "Marriage between a man and a woman isn't something Republicans invented, but it is something Republicans will defend."

She went on to say that marriage between a man and woman is the core foundation of our civilization and what family is all about. That we hold true to our moral principles, our values. She said she thought of them as the truths, her parents and grandparents had taught her; that they are true from sea to shining sea.

She also touched on abortion-calling it what it is, wrong. Dole reminded us, as Republicans, of what we stand for. That we value every human life, that we consider every life sacred.

"Protecting life isn't something Republicans invented, but it is something Republicans will defend," she says.

She goes on to say, “Two thousand years ago a man said, “I have come to give life and to give it in full." In America I have the freedom to call that man Lord, and I do."

I wanted to stand up and cheer for her. She placed herself out there for criticism, just as our President and First Lady have done; knowing there's bound to be ridicule and scorn for mentioning the Lord's name.

And yet the media has no qualms in slyly inserting blasphemous language into our movies, their conversation, their crude jokes.

It reminds me anew of how precious our freedom is and how quickly it's slipping away. Our freedom to worship without fear, our freedom to speak our minds, our freedom to pray to and sing to our wonderful Lord.

And as Elizabeth so rightly states, "The right to worship God isn't something Republicans invented, but it is something Republicans will defend."
