Pregnant? Nursing? --Hair loss remedy

I'm a mother of a six-month-old darling little girl. She is such a joy to our lives, but as I was carrying her, during those long nine months, my hair began falling out. I hated taking showers because more times than not the drain would be clogged with the long strands and I'd be wearing alot of it wet and tangled on my back, shoulders and arms.

Well I tried to ignore it, tried to deal with it, but when my daughter was born and I began breastfeeding her, I realized I had to get help. I could just run my hand through my hair and come back with a handful of loose strands. It was just lying on top of my head, not in clumps, but loose annoying strands that were everywhere--on my daughter's clothes, on our floor, on our couch.

Finally I asked other mothers who'd recently had a baby and were dealing with the same thing and I was recommended to get on a good women's multi-vitamin with vitamin B, E, and most importantly Zinc. Plus, I was to take a Stress-Zinc vitamin as well in the morning, each pill once a day. I take Nature Made (Women's vitamin) and Vitamin World (Stress/Zinc supplement). I take mine at breakfast.

Well, that was two months ago and now I'm proud to say my hair is on the road to healing. I can run my fingers through my hair and my hand comes out 90% of the time, hair free.

I also have been using a deep conditioning shampoo/conditioner (Garnier) and because my hair isn't so dry it isn't as apt to fall out. I'm not sure if the shampoo is helping, but I like the silky feel and lack of dryness.

Well, I hoped I helped fellow mothers out there. I feel so much better about myself, and my home now that it's not covered in ewww, my hair.

Comments From Readers ...

A reader says ... well im 18 and only 5 months in to my pregnancy and my hair is fallin out what should i do? is it normal?

A reader says ... I googled the same thing..."hair loss and nursing". I was beginning to think there might be something else wrong with me, but common sense was telling me that it might have something to do with the nursing. I'm really glad to see that I'm not alone. I'm still on a prenatal vitamin, but maybe I need more zinc. Thanks everyone!

A reader says ... Elevated progesterone levels of pregnancy can make our hair follicles dormant.  When estrogen levels come back the hair will grow back.  Nursing suppresses estrogen and progesterone.  Nursing mothers run mostly on prolactin and melatonin.  Nursing is one of the best things you can do for your baby and your health.  Don't stop nursing.  Keep going and over time all nature's developmental milestones will be met in your body and your baby's body. You couldn't be doing anything better.  Your hair will grow back.  Don't eat too much soy.  It will screw up your estrogen receptors.    Estrogen is good.  Progesterone is good.  The ying and yang will return to your life and you will be fertile again!  Estrogen will promote the hair growth.

A reader says ... I have a 3 month old daughter and my hair is falling like crazy. I wonder if  I will have any left soon. But by reading all these snippets from other people , atleast I know it is nothig to worry about. Thanks for the tips I received.

A reader says ... I have 4 children: 5, 3, and 14 month old twins. I had a brief shedding period after my second. It lasted a few months. But this time, it started falling out when the twins were about 4 months old, and it hasn't stopped!!! It has now been a full year. I'm still nursing a bit, and I'm hoping that my hair will quit coming out by the handful when I'm done. I've really been freaking out. I've had hormones checked and found very low progesterone. So far progesterone therapy hasn't helped. Maybe I should try the vitamins. At least I'm not alone!

A reader says ... I just googled "hair loss" and "nursing" to see if this is normal... I guess it is! I'd better get back on those vitamins. Thanks for the info.

A reader says ... from the author-- No problem. My daughter is now nine months old. I stopped nursing at 8 months--she wasn't getting enough, and had no problem switching from breast to bottle. Now that I'm not nursing, I've noticed my hair is falling out waaaaay less, and I wasn't on the vitamins for a week during a trip out of state(I know, bad me). But now I'm back home and I'll get back on them, but just wanted you to know. Between the vitamins and not nursing (hang in there, you'll know when it's time to wean), my hair is finally getting back to it's healthy, fuller, shinier self- YES!!

A reader says ... i also have a six month old and my hair is falling out like crazy. it's awfull. thanks for the advice!
