Review on 'The Princess Diaries'
This movie may appeal to little girls everywhere, but as a mother myself; I have found it intriguing as well. It's a story of a teenage girl who begins a journey from a disheartened "ugly duckling" to a lovely transformed young woman.
Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) learns that she is of royal blood and that she is about to choose to endure the long grueling process of becoming a princess at the hand of her stern grandmother and her quirky off-the-wall hairdresser. What would be a dream come true for most young girls is a nightmare for Mia.
There are moments in this film where Mia wavers between choosing her life as a beautiful popular princess or going back to her regular, normal teenage life.
But Mia knows she must make a very important decision, the biggest decision in her life. Since her father is dead, unless she takes the throne in his place, the Renaldi family will lose their throne in Genovia.
It's a hilarious spin of learning the social graces, which she badly lacks, overcoming her "klutzy" ways, to learning basic manners and taming her wild, unruly hair.
A good part of Mia's reluctance to accept the crown is her belief that she could never fill the shoes of a real life princess.
We learn in this movie what a princess really is defined as. That it's really what in the heart that counts, not the outward appearance.
This is a sentimental story, swirled in slapstick comedy and a romantic ending. A great, clean movie for the entire family-sure to please! Although few of us will ever be faced with such a critical decision as Mia, this movie does offer insight into our natural fears, how we face them and the wonderful gift of friendship.
