How do I explain seeing
In your eyes reflections
Of the annals of eternity,
The awareness that you existed
In my soul in a time before now,
Or recalling a previous voice
When your heart whispers my name--
That flicker of recognition
As if I knew you before now
Before I was cognizant
Of self or love?
Half turning, when out of the
Corner of my eye,
Just outside my vision's reach,
I catch a glimmer
Of your former self,
I know that before there was you
Or me--
Us
So close that when you inhale
I breathe somewhere near
Even when I'm gone
Just as before now.
