Our night alone.....
My husband was diagnosed with Cancer in August of 2005. We had five kids at the time, one of which only 5 months old and having some medical issues of his own. No family around us, we were left do deal with this news, the kids, and his cancer treatments on our own. With the five kids, we had not been able to have any time to ourselves prior to his diagnosis. His cancer treatments were scheduled for every other Friday, he was very sick from that Friday of a treatment until the Tuesday or Wed. before his next treatment, then it would start all over again.
The treatments were grueling. I sat in the cancer treatment room with him, and would watch the nurse hook up his Chemo. As the drips slowly entered his body, I could see the life drain from his face. That morning would be one of his better days; we would laugh together, go out to lunch, and enjoy each other's company. However, that afternoon, as the chemo would enter his body, the smile would fade, his shoulders would slump over, the joy that had been on his face just hours before, would be gone for another week and a half.
On the days he was feeling good, we would talk about running away, hiding from the chemo room. I decided to book us a nice place for a night or two on his “good days”. I had his parents come for a visit so they could keep the kids for us. I found a very nice “bed and breakfast” in a town not too far from home.
We were so excited to be able to get away for a couple days. He did not have much strength to do a lot of walking, and we had to be careful of crowds because of his low immune system, but we were tickled to be getting out of town.
I thought I had it all planned out, to surprise him with a nice room…. but when we arrived, the surprise was on me. He had found out where our reservations were, and had called ahead to have some beautiful roses and chocolates waiting for me in the room. Not only had he planned that, but also we were the only guest staying for the next 2 nights, the whole “Bed and Breakfast” house was ours.
The couple running the house was terrific, and gave us all the privacy we wanted. We spent the most romantic two days ever, just spending quality time with each other, and enjoying each other's company.
