Let’s pretend you and I are Sally’s parents.  Tommy & Sally have been dating 3 years since 7th grade.  Sally is a virgin who’s parents do not want her to have sex before marriage.

An angel told us that tonight Tommy & Sally are on a collision course to have sex and if left alone, a baby will be result.

In Jeremiah 1:4 God says, “Before you were conceived I knew you.”

Since God knows every human before they are conceived, should we refrain from stopping Tommy & Sally from having premarital sex?

No, we should try and stop them from having sex.  Why?  Because God teaches that having sex with a virgin is wrong. Exodus 22:16-18   says, “If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price, and she shall be his wife.  If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he must still pay the bride-price for virgins.”

So, even though God knows every human that will ever be conceived, it doesn’t mean God wants the human to be conceived.

What is important is not what naturally will happen if left alone, but rather what pleases God

Teen Pregnancy—Is Abortion Murder?

1. Relationship1. Relationship

Tommy & Sally have had sex.  Sally is now pregnant.  Sally wants to abort the baby in the first 6 weeks.  Is she murdering the baby?

What does God say?

Because of guilt placed there by Christian friends, Sally decides to keep the baby and so …

9 Months Pass ...

1. Relationship

Sally delivers a baby boy right on schedule!

There is only one passage in the Bible that directly talks about anything close to aborting a baby.  The verses are Exodus 21 verses 22 to 25.  They read, “If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief  follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt  give life for life, Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.” (KJV)

When reading this passage it appears that a man hits a woman and causes her to miscarry.  The miscarriage is described as, “her fruit (the baby) depart from her”.

And the punishment is that the woman's husband gets to fine him if the judge agrees.  But if, after the miscarriage, the man continues to hit the woman, then the punishment is eye for eye, tooth for tooth and life for life.

It’s clear God did not consider the miscarriage murder, instead the punishment is more of a fine.

But let's read the verses before this passage to get more of a perspective.  They are Exodus 21 verses 20 and 21 which read, “If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished,  but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property. “

Here we see slaves were considered property and a slave owner could beat the slave as long  as the slave got up after a day or two after the beating. But what if the slave died a week or a month or a year later as a result of an injury from the beatings?

It seems from this passage that the Old Testament law, given by God, did not put much value on human life.  They considered humans “property”.

Deuteronomy 23 verse 2 says, “A bastard shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to his tenth generation shall he not enter into the congregation of the LORD.”

This verse indicates that an illegitimate child could not get saved, nor could the child's descendants, for 10 generations.

It is clear from this passage that God is not pleased with illegitimate children.

If abortion existed back in Old Testament days it appears they might have mandated that all illegitimate children be aborted.

Going back to point 1, we knew God would want us to stop Tommy and Sally from having sex because we knew God would not be pleased with them having sex.

Now that we know from Deuteronomy 23 verse 2 that God is also not pleased with an illegitimate child, then how can we be so sure God would not allow Sally to stop her illegitimate pregnancy?

Just like, even though God knows every human  before they are conceived, that still doesn’t tell us that God wants the human conceived—as in the case of Sally & Tommy having premarital sex.

Personally I believe God loves illegitimate children even though the Old Testament does not reflect this.

1. Relationship

Now that her illegitimate child is born, what does God have to say about it?

1. Relationship

Sally lives in poverty the rest of her life.  She does not have an education.  She is overweight due to the pregnancy so she can not find a good husband and so she lives on welfare and odd jobs and she lives on the poor side of town.  Her son hangs out with other poor and gets in a gang and ends up committing murder and living his life out in prison.

A society that persuades young girls to have their illegitimate babies has an obligation to make sure they are able to get an education and not end up living in poverty.

God cares about the poor.

So is abortion murder?

It may be for you and me, because Paul said “Whatsoever is not of faith is sin.”

But is it murder for someone else who thinks it is not sin?

God does not condemn abortion in the Bible so we cannot go around telling people they are murdering when they abort their baby.  That is the truth.

Personally I would not abort my baby and I think we should have laws banning abortion after the first 3 months, except for in the case of incest or rape.

My point isn’t that abortion is a good thing, it’s not God’s best.  But then unwanted pregnancies are not God’s best either.  My point is rather that we should not unfairly call abortion murder.
